Apropos of nothing, power stops flowing to my
machine's keyboard/mouse. This happens with
absolutely no fanfare or warning. I'll be
typing/mousing, and suddenly the input devices are
dead. Tapping "capslock" does not produce a green
light, so I know it is not getting any juice.

This also happens when I am away from the computer
and it is asleep. When I return and tap a key or
move the mouse, I find the power stopped. The
computer itself is still chugging normally.

When this happens I have tried
unplugging/re-plugging the keyboard power cord, as
well as changing the USB port into which it is
plugged, both to no avail. After I reboot via the
paperclip trick, all is well until the next time.
This can happen several times a day.

Any ideas about why and how to cure?

Thanks!
