I had the problem with both a 400mhz and a 266mhz imac and somewhere I found out how to reset the modem by going into Appleworks and I think when the menu for Appleworks comes up you choose Communications and then you have to type in some command to reset the Modem. I may have found this info in the original booklets that came with the machines or a help file. I don't recall at the moment. I thought they were both gone for over a year until I found out how to reset them. You might try a search or check the manuals.
