How is it better to use an application dedicated to Usenet vs. one like
Thunderbird?

Because a tool that is specific to a job is usually better than a swiss-army-knife approach.

Why not TRY some of the dedicated Usenet programs we've suggested (like MT-Newswatcher and Unison) and *see for yourself* if you like them better?

There's nothing wrong with Thunderbird for Usenet reading/downloading, just as there's nothing wrong with using generic cars for normal everyday errands. On the other hand, just I wouldn't want to a car off the dealer's lot to run the Indy 500, neither do some people wish to use what they perceive as a limited, "basic" type tool for the level of Usenet spelunking they want to do.
