I have a Mac G4 quicksilver that I'm still running OS 9 on. There is an
early version of X on it - I think 10.1... - but I never boot it up in X as
I'd had trouble in the past going back and forth between 9 and X.

I'd like to install either Panther or Tiger on this G4 now. My hubby just
bought a new iBook and I have a terrible case of Mac envy... and I've been
wanting to do it anyway.

I've been cleaning up my hard drive and backing everything up. Ran Norton
(SystemWorks 2) Disk Doctor... did it a couple times as the first time it
said there was a major error of some sort. Subsequent runs have gone better
with only minor repairs needed. Now to defrag - everytime I start up
SpeedDisk it tells me I can't defrag and I need to run DiskDoctor. So I run
DD again, and still can't degrag when I attempt again.

So what to do now?

Is there another utility I should use to defrag in OS 9?

Should I go ahead and install X and then try to defrag with X installed?

Also, I would like to install Tiger, but am concerned that because hubby's
software is for one user that we might have some trouble since we're
networked (DSL router). I'm sure it is much safer for me to install Panther
(which I purchased a family pack awhile ago, and it has been installed on
our two iMacs and hubby's previous iBook) - but the envy is overwhelming.

Can we upgrade hubby's Tiger to a family pack or do I have to buy another
one at full price?

Thanks for any help sent this way,

Kathy K
