You don't OWN the music.

This is absolutely and unequivocally NOT TRUE. You *do* own the music and can burn it to CD and keep it FOREVER (indeed, you are EXPECTED by Apple to back up your music purchases to audio CD -- they EXPLICITLY tell you so MULTIPLE TIMES in the fine print of their agreements!).

At least it's a loose-DRM, tho - so you can convert the
tracks to mp3 or other formats without any significant loss.

Again, this is utterly incorrect. You can "convert" the track to any format you'd like -- lossy or LOSSLESS. It's YOUR TRACK, do what you want with it (within the boundaries of the law).

Now, some would argue that the AAC 128kbps format chosen by Apple for delivery of the music is less than truly CD quality. I can't argue with that at all, but would say only that it's pretty close to my ears. Could it possibly be better? Yes. Is it more than adequate enough for 99% of consumers? Again, yes.

But this idea that you can't convert your purchased tracks into other formats is UTTER NONSENSE and is only spouted by people who really have NO idea what they're talking about.

IOW, they're missing so much they sound terrible when
pumped thru a good set of speakers.

No they don't. I have EXCELLENT speakers around the house (among other jobs, I'm a music critic who often writes reviews of live classical and opera performance -- I know good sound when I hear it). The songs purchased from iTunes are, as you correctly point out, not quite CD quality -- and certainly small flaws CAN be detected when listening carefully on good speakers -- but again, most people do not have "audiophile ears."

It's complete rubbish to say that they "sound terrible." Compared to what? MP3s? Don't make me laugh. When it comes to compressed music, AAC sounds considerably better than MP3, particularly on the midranges.

You're just parroting blather you picked up from snotty-nosed hi-fi types who can't imagine listening to music with less than $6,000 worth of equipment. It's a bunch of malarkey and good old-fashioned MS-style FUD -- nothing more and nothing less.
