Do you informed Mac geeks think that the new Intel CPUs will make a new
operating system necessary?

Given that OS X has been running on Intel processors in Apple's labs for five years now, the answer to that would be a pretty definative NO.

One that will not let us run our OSX
programs?

Of course not.

All of your old OS X software will continue to run as it does now for years and years to come, either by the developers issuing minor "updates" (or rolling it into their normal updates) or through Rosetta (again, this was explained at length in the keynote -- it's really, really worth watching!).

Classic looks like it's going to be phased out starting in 2007, but given that it will be a decade or more before Classic-running Macs will start to become scarce in the marketplace, this is really not an issue.
