Do you informed Mac geeks think that the new Intel CPUs will make a new
operating system necessary?
Given that OS X has been running on Intel processors in Apple's labs
for five years now, the answer to that would be a pretty definative
NO.
Technically, Chas, the answer is YES! Unless the Jaguar, Panther, and
current Tiger install disks are hybrids containing both the intel &
PPC versions, then a new OS will be required. Obviously when the
first intels ship in 2006, they'll have a new, different version of
OS 10.4 than the latest update version. Apple will probably have two
seperate versions of OS 10.4 for the rest of the 10.4 lifespan. When
Leopard is released in early 2007, it makes sense that it be intel
only. (BTW, doesn't Apple realize that Panther & Leopard are
different names for the same animal?). Then again, Apple could say
that if it runs a PPC, then nothing higher than 10.4.5 will run on
it, having the top of the line power user models running an OS that
is not as capable as the consumer intel models running 10.4.8
