They could be hybrids for all we know (although I doubt it). I don't think Apple is going to sell two different versions of 10.4. That is exactly what they are trying to avoid with the Universal Binaries. There will be one version of 10.4 that works on both machines. And there will be one version of 10.5 that works on both machines, and probably one version of 10.6 that works on both (after that, who knows). > When >Leopard is released in early 2007, it makes sense that it be intel >only. Actually, that makes NO sense. Steve said in the keynote they have new PPC machines on their way out. They will still be selling thru 2006 most likely. They will get phased out in 2007 most likely, so by the end of 2007, the only *new* machines Apple will offer will be Intel based. That means, there will be PPC machines that are at best a year old. Why would Apple cut all those brand new machines out of selling them a $130 OS upgrade? That is a ton of OS upgrade money they would be throwing away. They are telling all the developers to build Universal applications, not Intel only apps. So why would Apple not do the same thing?!? They make money from OS sales and from sales of iLife and sales of all their other software. Why on earth would they decide to cut the entire PPC market less then a year after the last PPC rolled off the line?!? These will be machines with 3-5 years of usuable life left in them, and so 3-5 years of software upgrades can be sold to them. No, Apple will be sure that 10.5 runs on PPC, and most likely 10.6 as well (assuming an 18 month cycle like Apple said they are moving to). 10.7 might be the first OS that would have PPC dropped, but even then, unless there is some compelling hardware reason to do so, I suspect it too may work on PPC. >(BTW, doesn't Apple realize that Panther & Leopard are >different names for the same animal?). Maybe they do realize this. Maybe it is their way of saying 10.5 is just going to be a rebadged 10.4 :-) >Then again, Apple could say >that if it runs a PPC, then nothing higher than 10.4.5 will run on >it, having the top of the line power user models running an OS that >is not as capable as the consumer intel models running 10.4.8 That would be nuts, see my above comments. -chris <http://www.mythtech.net> -- The iMac List is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
