The main difference is size and portability. The airport extreme is larger, but it mounts to a wall nicely, or you can find some nice corner to put it in. The airport express was designed specifically to travel, and for home use. It's about the same size as the iBook power adapter. It has the ability to hook directly to your home stereo, which lets you play your music in iTunes wirelessly over your home stereo system. I think the express can handle up to 10 computers wirelessly at one time. The airport extreme is designed to handle more computers ( I think 50), and has a few more options- like mine has a built in 56k modem. There is a version that is designed to be installed inside your ceiling so it's completely out of sight and out of mind. Odds are that the express will work better for you, especially if you want the wireless music thing.

Hi All,

I've been subscribed and reading for 6 months, but if I remember rightly, this is my first message to this list.

I have had nothing but nightmares with my Netgear wireless router (it used to work for days but now drops me 10x a day, and I have extensively tested EVERY troubleshooting technique people have posted on the web, to no avail). Anyway, I am now in the market for an airport or airport express. I have a small apartment and use a cable modem.

I am wondering if there is any reason to get an Airport Extreme, which is $79 plus tax more than the Express? The Express does have a firewall and other security features, but maybe someone who understands these things better than me can tell me why the expensive version is worth it? Or not?

If it makes a difference, I plan to use it with a G4 powerbook with Airport Extreme 802.11g card, and an imac (either an old G3 or a new G5) I hope to get soon!

Many thanks!
Kate
