rebuilding desktop is only for when you start to notice icons for
files are not what they should be (for example, a text document
showing the html document icon)
im not sure about this one, but i think the geometry thing doesnt
show up for some people's imac's. my previous imac never showed it
(as far as i can remember)

a quick search reveals that the G3 imac DV 400 can be upgraded to 512
MB using two PC100 SDRAM's.

The date and time keeps defaulting to midnight when I power up.

the PRAM but it's still the same. Do I need to fit a new PRAM

yes, you have to replace the internal battery. i dont know where you
can get one in UK, i live in US. try doing a google search for
something like: http://www.google.com/search?q=UK%20imac%20battery%
