I know there are some issues with RAM in the older machines, so maybe
someone can help me out here.....My wife's parents have a Lime 333mhz
tray-loader, and when I went to upgrade the RAM so that I could also
upgrade them to OSX (from 8.6) I had a couple of issues. First, I had
two 256MB sticks that I had previously used in a iBook 600 and in a
Lombard 333. So after taking everything apart, I get no startup, just
a gray screen. Wouldn't even get to open firmware, wouldn't work with
shift down, nothing. Thinking it might be the RAM, I pulled the top
stick out and it started up - but only 128MB shows up. I went back in
and reseated the RAM chip, buttoned things up not so thoroughly and
started up again but still the same 128MB. Tried the other RAM chip
there, but the same result. Neither would work in the top slot, btw.
So I left it in and put an old 64MB chip into the top slot, which
gives them 192MB, a large improvement from the 32 they had. But
what's up with the RAM? They both work in a Lombard, which is
essentially the same board.....Now she's got another problem with
Netscape, so I'd really like to go with the OSX upgrade to make my
diagnostic life a little easier. I never ran 8.6 on anything, I went
from 8.0 to 9.1 and then X exclusively for the last two years.

The tray load iMacs aren't spec'd to work with 256 MB chips. That said,
some people have gotten it to work, some haven't. I had good luck with
it, and had found that as long as you get the correct density ram, and
you watch that the ram retaining clips don't contact any of the chips on the card, then it seemed to work for me. I did several this way. All mine
were Rev A or Rev B machines.

I recently did it with a 333 tray loader like yours, and I had the same
results. No boot at all while a 256 MB was in the top slot, and in the
bottom slot it would only see 128 MB of it. I have the correct density
chips (they were actually pulled from a Rev A using them to get to 512
MB), and I checked to be sure the retaining clips weren't shorting
anything... still no go.

So it looks like my luck in the past was just that... luck... and it ran out. Maybe the 333 Apple changed something that stopped it from working
with 256 chips.

Dang, does that mean I'm stuck? It's showing 192MB right now, but I'd really like to be able to run OSX easily. And that means more RAM!!!! I will check the clips on the bottom to see if they are hitting the leads from the chips, I hadn't thought of that one. But this same RAM worked in a Lombard Powerbook, which is the same 333mhz processor on the same 66mhz bus - both of them came out in 1999, they are pretty much the same computer.
