PPOE on 9.x is a pain. I used to be a EarthLink Tech... oh god.. just
get a router.. :)

Assuming Verizon uses PPPoE to connect . . .
It's probably 10.1 because of the PPPoE built in to OS X. However,
if you get a router it should be able to connect to the DSL modem
via PPPoE, and the iMac will connect to the router using DHCP,
which OS 9 handles fine.
Routers can be dirt-cheap after rebate now - check dealmac.com; for
example, ending today there's one for $2.99 after rebate! ( http://
dealmac.com/search.html?search=router )
When I first got DSL I had 9 on my Wallstreet; I used the PPPoE
client provided by my DSL provider, and it totally messed up my
system. I cleaned it off & went the router route & never looked
back. (Plus there's the firewall advantage!) So even if Verizon
provided software to allow you to connect with OS 9, take my word
for it, you wouldn't want it!
