I can also say this too. At EarthLink.. countless hours of just
trying to fix enternet and macpoet installs.. ugh.. hardware is the
way to go.. if the router doesnt have it.. do yourself a favor and
buy one that does...

How can I tell if it is PPPoE or DHCP? They indicated they are
shipping a router with the connection kit (to handle my wireless
windows laptop). Will this work? What about passwords, etc? We
are still dial-up. That requires DNS numbers, server info, etc.
What connections do I need? Is this realy as simple as plug it
in and connected?

I've seen routers with WiFi and PPPoE built in. If that's the case
then you are in luck, otherwise you will need MacPoet or Enternet
You really don't want Enternet, and probably MacPoet, if you can
help it. Enternet royally messed up my Wallstreet.
If the router and DSL modem are all in one box and the router
doesn't handle the PPPoE, I guess there's not much you can do, but
every standalone router (incl. wireless ones) I've seen has handled
the PPPoE so your computer doesn't have to.
In the setups I've dealt with (granted, not a lot of different
ones) you set up the LAN (home network, all the machines plugged
into or talking wirelessly with the router), then log into the
router's administrative interface via a browser window (address is
the router's IP) to have it connect, via the DSL modem, to the
internet.
But I've just set up SNET and DSLextreme, not Verizon.
