Hi Group.
Got a bit of a problem that has me stymied, and I¹m sure
that the guru¹s on this list can help me out. Please?

First, the necessary background info:

iMac Blueberry slot-loader, 350MHz, 6GB HD w/3.19GB available at this
time, 192MB Memory, running OS 9.1, Virtual Memory is on.

I¹m using Outlook Express v.4.5 as my mail handler. Memory of OE
is set at 4k suggested, 6k minimum, and 10k preferred sizes.

Up until a few days ago, everything hunky-dory. Can¹t recall doing
anything new/different to cause this problem:

Whenever I open an email with any embedded attachment(s), most
times now I get only the image placeholder. Occassionally, it seems
that the smaller images will eventually appear, but the larger pics
will remain as placeholders.

I¹ve tried dumping my OE preferences panel, my cache of internet
prefs, and bumping up the OE preferred memory from 8k to 10k.

So, any suggestions? I know it¹s some kinda memory problem, right?
With all this unused HD space, and trashing pref files, I thought that
would clear up the problem; but alas - no.

I know that this is a stupid little mindless fix, but I¹m at a loss as to
what
it could be and how to correct it.

If anyone can give me a point in the right direction, I would be forever
greatful.

Thanks!!

Bill

Bill,

Assuming you haven't made any changes in your system, check with your Internet service provider to see if they have made any changes in their support of your version of Outlook Express. That's most likely why you've all of a sudden started not getting images. You might try downloading the latest version of Outlook Express from Microsoft as yours is kind of "ancient" by now, and may no longer be fully supported by your ISP.

In addition, it wouldn't hurt to upgrade to OS 9.2.2, available via free downloads from Apple.

Finally, recognize that this is fair warning concerning the future Internet viability of your entire setup. In other words, it is time to start thinking about migrating to more modern equipment or at least a more modern OS (i.e., OS X). You can run OS X 10.2 Jaguar AND OS 9.1-9.2.2 on your machine without a problem, though 192 MB RAM is marginal, and your hard drive is just barely big enough to hold the OS X install and leave you some breathing room. You also can run OS X 10.3 Panther (via CD install disc). Or you can get OS X 10.4 Tiger shoehorned in there if you can obtain CD install discs, even though Apple does not formally support non-firewire machines for 10.4.

You can buy yourself some time by upgrading your logic board to a 400-500 MHz Motorola-cpu logic board (careful; some 500 MHz logic boards have IBM cpus which require a heat sink in a location different than the built-in one in your 350) with dual firewire ports, maxing out RAM at 512 MB and installing a larger hard drive and a better optical drive than the standard 24xCD. But the cost of doing this will be in the neighborhood of $200-300 (more or less), which would buy a good used 600-700 MHz G3 iMac. Or you simply can try one of the other browsers out there, such as iCab, that are compatible with OS 9.x. But first, check with your ISP and find out what versions of the Mac operating system, and corresponding browsers, they now support and those they expect to be supporting in the next year or so. Good luck.
