I don't know if you got other replies or not or if you solved your problem. Also I'm not an expert but here's a simple procedure. Assuming you are using OS X.
First go to "Finder - Go - Utilities - Disk Utility" and verify and repair preferences on your hard drive. Next, Go under the Apple and select "location - network - preferences" This will bring up a menu that shows options for connecting to the internet. It should indicate if your Airport card is communicating with the base station. If not try re-configuring it. You can also use this menu to re-configure your network to connect via the ethernet/modem setup.
