Actually, it didn't come with Panther, but it came with the iMac - I
think Appleworks 6 with that one (but I can't find a place to confirm
that), which will run in X. There are updates on the Apple site to
bring it up to 6.2.9 (I think, or .7).
It does provide both the WP and spreadsheet you want, if your WP
needs are quite simple. Actually, I'm not really one to talk as I
don't use it for WP. I do often use Appleworks to open Excel
spreadsheets and it does a pretty good job.
Abiword is just a WP, isn't it? I have it & use it to open
Wordperfect documents, but I've never really worked in it.
NeoOffice is a suite so it also has both, like Appleworks. It can
take forever to open, at least for me, which can be annoying. I've
never seriously tried to use it so I can't give a real opinion.

I use it to make some pretty impressive newsletters plus church
Sunday service bulletins and now use it for lots of other things - in
fact, it's my main word processor. It's quite different from Word so
it did have some learning curve, but I've grown to love it, as most
users do based on the VT rating!
For very simple letters & notes, I just use Textedit now.
