I have a iMac 600 Dalmatian 256Mb RAM, 40Gig HD and am running OS
9.2.2 but
now have gotten OS X Panther.
Get more RAM. I'd suggest keeping the 256MB if it's a single stick,
and adding a 512MB. I had a very similar machine and the difference
was quite noticeable. At least go to 512MB.
I use computer for e-mail, web and
non-complicated spreadsheets and word processing. I have MS Office
98 on
the OS 9 and am very familiar with that software.
You can continue using it in Classic, or you can simply upgrade to
Office X. If you like and use Office, why not just stick with Office?
It's available for less than $100 if you shop around.
Others have mentioned some of the alternatives: NeoOffice/J (which is
horrifically UGLY but does the job I guess), ThinkFree Office (I
think it's around $30-50) and AbiWord (which won't help with the
spreadsheet thing but is really turning into a decent Word substitute).
Someone mentioned Appleworks, which you probably already have on that
machine and, when updated (free), will run beautifully in OS X. It
handles basic Word and Excel compatibility no problem, so that's
certainly your cheapest option.
