I recently went looking for an older iMac, simply because I thought they really looked 'cool'. I found one for $150 at macofalltrades.com and bought it. I thought it would be a fun toy to play with. It got here and had 9.2 installed. I found that it had 2 USB ports and 2 firewire ports as well as network and modem and a VGA connector in the back. To my surprise, it also has 256 RAM and a place to put an airport carrier for the original airport card (just so happens, I have one). It only has a CD-ROM--the slot loading type and I wanted to load Tiger on it....I only have it on DVD. I wondered, now if this iMac has all these features, will it also boot up in firewire target disk mode? I restarted and held down the T key....sure enough, it did! I connected it to a Quicksilver and installed Tiger on it. It's running it perfectly! I have to say, I'm simply impressed. Here I thought I was getting a toy to play around with and it turns out I got a machine that can play along with some of my other Macs. Only thing I need to change is the hard drive. It is only 10 gig. I've looked at a few of the instruction manuals on how to do this and it looks a bit complicated and I have about 20 years experience of upgrading PC's and Macs. Anyway, I am going to invest in the card carrier and I have a 120 gig firewire HD connected to it.
I'll end this post by saying, I'm simply pleased.

Tim
Exterminate all rational though.

Tim, changing the HD and RAM for that matter is not all that difficult on this machine. Just be careful not to drop any of the screws down into the iMac case. They can be difficult to get out. Don't ask me how I know! I put an 80 Mb Maxtor in mine and I have it booting X, 9 and YDL as well.

Just a message from Doug...
