Do you have a link to any instruction site that isn't written in
Greek? In other words, something that gives you a nice step by step
with pictures that you don't have to use a magnifying glass to see?
I was thinking of popping in a 120 gig. I had heard that there were
'heat issues' with an 80 gig. You've had no problems? Can I ask the
specs and manufacturer on your HD?
You got a great deal on the iMac, Tim!
I had a 700MHz G3 iMac that had a whiny hard drive (the original from
the factory). I replaced it with a 120GB Western Digital (IIRC, but
now that I've had a couple of failures with other WD drives I can't
recommend them anymore) 7200RPM and had no heat issues at all -- in
fact it actually ran slightly cooler! I assume improvements in ball-
bearing or fluid-bearing technology makes today's 7200s cooler than
yesterday's 5400s.
Let me make one suggestion on that machine. Buy a UPS unit with AVR
(Automatic Voltage Regulation). One of the few problems that model of
iMac is prone to is video card failure, and I believe that a good UPS
can extend the life of that card by some considerable margin. In any
event, it won't hurt and it's a real good investment.
I used to rarely if ever actually shut my G3 iMac off -- I'd just let
it sleep instead. It gave me several years of trouble-free blissful
operation before the video card finally gave out -- gave me the
excuse I'd been looking for to upgrade!
