Although it looks like you solved your problem, it could have happened
without any part of the flouerscent light being near the iMac.

I know it's the light, because when I had it plugged in, it jittered, and then afterwards I unplugged it and it immediately stopped. I plugged it back in, and when the light had warmed up, it started jittering again.

If possible, I'd relocate that flourescent light to a totally different
outlet, or at least stick a UPS or power filter between the iMac and the
outlet containing the light.

I should be getting another circuit altogether down there (From the breaker - its own switch and everything :-P ) soon, so the light will be on a different circuit. I'll see if I can plug that light in somewhere else...currently, the outlet that the iMac is on is the only outlet in the basement.

Other devices to avoid on the same outlet
and possibly circuit is anything with a compressor, such as a fridge or
air conditioner or anything with an AC motor (vacuums, power tools,
things like that).

None of those down there. :-)

Thanks for the tips

Thank you for all the help, but I have solved the problem. I have a
flourescent work drop light plugged into the strip, but it's over at
the basement stairs - about 10 ft from the desk. I was wondering how
it could cause interference from that far away, because when I
unplugged it, the iMac stopped jittering. But then I realized it has
a big'ol transformer that I had hidden under the desk, and the iMac is
directly under it. I relocated the transformer, and the screen
stopped jittering. :-)

Many devices can send a large deal of interference back over the power
line, so anything else plugged into the same outlet, and sometimes even
the same circuit, can be effected.

This is why I recommend using UPS or other device that will filter the
power and plug only your computer and its peripherals (but NOT laser
printers) into that UPS/Filter. Last printers should not be plugged into them, 1: because they can be one of those sources of power noise, and 2: they can draw too much current when warming up and potentially damage the UPS (most home/small office UPSes will come with a warning not to plug a
laser printer into the UPS).

And while you are avoiding things, watch out for cheap speakers or non
computer speakers. The magnets in them can make a mess of CRTs. If you
must put speakers near a CRT (this includes a TV) be sure to get ones
that are shielded or designed for close proximity to a CRT.
