Hi. I am moving soon and am looking for a good web-based e-mail system
that I can access from anywhere. Something like Hotmail, I guess. I
hear there are many different ones but have no way of knowing which
one
to choose. Hotmail is MS, isn't it?

If ALL you want is webmail, anybody's is as good as anyone else's.

Hi all,

I don't agree! If all you want is webmail, go for Gmail. Not yahoo and definitely not hotmail. I have something like 2.5G of storage space for email at gmail. The system is easy to use. The spam filter is great--almost always catches spam, almost never catches good stuff, and what's more, it's easy to scan, and they do not delete it for a month. Hotmail is no comparison. The ads are there (small targeted niche marketing text ads) but they are not obtrusive (no banners, no images, small text). You can easily archive your email and search for it using keywords--it brings up entire threads at once.

This is not like yahoo or hotmail, and I am quite impressed.

I also like the "gmail notifier" app (which is free) which sits unobtrusively in my menubar and lists the number of gmail messages present in my inbox when I am connected to the internet--even if I have not opened a browser window or looked at gmail that day. Awesome. (It has a bug or two, but is useful anyway.)

I know some people use the .mac features--I never did. I have other options for website hosting, and I have gotten more mileage from an $80 external hard drive than I ever would from their online storage. For me, paying $99 a year for an email address is too much of a luxury if you can find other solutions for the other .mac services provided.

Best Wishes,
Kate
