I'm thinking of getting a Tivo for Christmas.
I don't fully understand the online instructions, which say that the
Tivo set can connect to a wireless 82.11 network, but they only list
Linksys wireless as compatible, and talk about plugging in a USB port.
Which, as we know, our Airports base stations don't have. My cable
router has one but it's located 2 floors away from where I'd want the
Tivo.
Thanks for any advice?
I think it is saying it is compatible with a USB Wireless adaptor, and
likely only tested with the LinkSys model.
Basically, the TiVo has no built in wireless ability. So you would go
to
your favorite computer or office supply store, and buy a LinkSys USB
Wireless Adaptor. This is a little box with an antenna that plugs into
a
computer (or in your case the TiVo) via a USB cable.
This LinkSys box would be hooked up to the TiVo via USB, and then
configured to work with your existing wireless network.
Hopefully that makes some sense.
Ideally it works that easily. ;)
I just bought a TiVo series 2 unit from a friend, including a Linksys
WUSB11 (v2.6) wireless adapter. TiVo's support page shows the adapter
to be supported, but it flat doesn't work - it gives a "message 86"
error (if memory serves); I have only been able to get the phone line
working.
Don: before choosing a wireless adapter for your TiVo series 2 unit, be
sure to check the TiVo support forums at tivo.com to see if people have
been successful in using a particular unit with the latest version of
the software. TiVo software 7.2 seems to have broken support for many
adapters.
Now, once I do get mine working, and once you get yours working,
TiVoTool will be REALLY cool. :D
