Hi everyone,
I'm a new subscriber to this list, joining in the hope that someone might know the best way to proceed with this problem:
A friend of mine has finally given in to my badgering and switched from Windows. He just bought a clearance 20" iMac G5. The problem, I understand, is familiar to many:
He cannot connect at higher than 28.8k, regardless of modem settings. His windows machines consistently connect at 50k. We dialed in to the AppleCare PPP test line, and still could not get higher than 28.8k.
The AppleCare tech suggested it is a modem problem, and that we take it to a repair depot for repair. Has anyone had any luck going this route, ie: a modem swap?
After years of telling my friend about what a better machine the Mac is, I feel terribly embarrassed. I hope to assist him in resolving this issue quickly, with as little grief as possible. I think he's feeling a bit of culture shock switching from Windows, and I'd hate to see him give up over something like this.
