My iMac G5 has started to make nasty little noises. This Mac makes
me =20=
very nervous since I bought it in May 2005. The processor seems to =20
have many ups and downs. For some reason it revs up then goes down.
I =20=
can see it by watching the percentage of use with Cee Pee You or =20
MiniCpuUsage widget.
Are you saying it goes up and down without any apparent cause? How
far up and down (a modest amount is perfectly normal -- it refreshes
the screen, writes to its log and does other self-maintenance all the
time!)?
Also in the economy pref pane, what's a good =20
setting: Maximum or Automatic?
Apple set it at Automatic, and unless you truly require max
horsepower most of the time (say, for example, you are encoding large
video files), I'd leave it on Automatic.
Also, I hear some faint "disk =20
scratching" noise at times. It doesn't happen all the time but it
did =20=
not happen at all before.
It's impossible to say for sure what might be happening there. It
could be a problem, or it could be that you're just "picking up" on
sounds you didn't hear before for a variety of reasons. Just do your
usual maintenance, and backup your files routinely, and stop worrying
so much.
If you genuinely think there may be a mechanical issue, take it in
for servicing. If you have AppleCare, it won't cost you much (or
anything) to do so. If you don't, the peace of mind of having a
qualified tech do a full diagnostic is surely worth the "bench
minimum"? Perhaps you can still buy AppleCare as well, you should
look into it.

Claiming that the Macintosh is inferior to Windows because most
people use Windows is like saying that all other restaurants are
inferior to McDonald's.
