Quick question about OS X...

1) How slow will this be. I have a Rev. B iMac, Sonnets Harmoni Upgrade (500 mhz 256 cache), 512 MB ram, 20 GB hard drive

For the most part, it will be quite fast. I'm on a 300-MHz G3 with 284 MB RAM. Just put Tiger on it. It runs quite nicely! Except for a few things, its faster than OS 9 was.

2) Will the hard drive be large enough?

OS X Tiger with a bunch of languages and Xcode installed is 7 GB. Add a few more gigs for your own apps and the swap files. Refirb 80 GB IDE drives can be had on eBay for about $25, btw.

3) Currently have a Cannon i320 color printer. Will this still work?

The top link offered when you search for "os x printers" on Apple's web site is a massive list:

http://www.apple.com/macosx/upgrade/printers.html

4) Currently have a HandSpring Visor Edge. Will this still connect?

Sorry; no idea what that be.

5) What software will need to be upgraded (I have AppleWorks 5, a few games, Quicken '98, and Connectix Virtual PC and Microsoft Office '98)?

Classic is sucky slow. So I recommend going to AppleWorks 6, which is X native.

Check out OpenOffice as a free alternative to contaminating your sweet iMac with MS garbage.

Look on VersionTracker for the latest versions of your other apps.

6) What is rough cost of the OS?

I paid $70 for an unopened full retail Tiger, on eBay.

7) How difficult is this?

Takes a while to get used to X. But for the most part, the transition is pretty smooth.

Plan it out. Make good backups. Find your X-equivalent apps ahead of time.
