Hi Thoma,
I was a holdout and didn't move from 9.2.2 to Panther, until last
summer! Now, I don't know why I ever waited; the iMac never crashes,
no slowdowns!
I love Panther 10.3.9 on my Sage iMac 450mhz. w/ 1g and upgraded HD to
120g but, also ran beautifully on Graphite w/512 and 12gHD!
You will love it. Before, I did the upgrade, I read everything I could
find at, Apple discussions and found out:
1) do a firmware upgrade FIRST to 4.9 to avoid endless misery (see this
link: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86117)
2) put in a fresh battery (try headgap.com for good price and
illustrated instructions)
Here is another helpful link: http://www.apple.com/support/panther
Be sure you get a retail version of Panther maybe 10.3 (ask the list at
Low End Mac or try eBay) and then do the upgrade at Apple for 10.3.9 to
avoid probs.
Appleworks 6 is included in Panther so you have an upgrade for that.
Personally, I love the Safari browser & its built in mail , and am
also using Opera. Some folks love Firefox, too.
My personal prefs:
My macs don't have anything Norton, or Microsoft, on them to avoid
nasty gremlins!
I run a nifty little utility called Macaroni, which does all the unix
magic maintenance automatically and costs about $9 (atomicbird.com)
Some people also like Onyx and Coctail for these jobs, too.
Still happily using iTunes 4.9 as I don't require the bells & whistles
in the upgrades and same with QuickTime, still using 6.5.2 (check out
apple discussions and MacFixit discussions for more information on the
probs with the upgrades)
Have fun with Panther!

Quick question about OS X...
1) How slow will this be. I have a Rev. B iMac, Sonnets Harmoni
Upgrade (500 mhz 256 cache), 512 MB ram, 20 GB hard drive
2) Will the hard drive be large enough?
3) Currently have a Cannon i320 color printer. Will this still work?
4) Currently have a HandSpring Visor Edge. Will this still connect?
5) What software will need to be upgraded (I have AppleWorks 5, a few
games, Quicken '98, and Connectix Virtual PC and Microsoft Office
'98)?
6) What is rough cost of the OS?
7) How difficult is this?
