Dan,
I seriously believe that something must be wrong with your PB. I
nurse quite a number of macs and have never seen periodic/weekly take
more than 15 minutes, no matter how old they were or how long time it
was since the last running.
Have you checked the drive with TechTool or similar lately?

It took Spotlight TWO DAYS to index my HDs.
And today, Spotlight has been chunking along, trying to catch up

maintenance tasks running in the background when the user is idle
leads to excessive hard drive usage, I would be pleased to learn
about it.

*still* running.
