Your assumption is correct. USB 2 is backwards compatible with USB 1, so 
the connection will work fine, you just won't get the full speed.

To step out of the "theoretical" and into the "real world", my neice and 
nephew both have iPods (one has the Video one the Nano), they are using 
them on a PC, when the plug them in WIn XP nicely reports they will get 
better performance if they use a USB 2.0 port (which they don't have on 
their PC), and then starts iTunes and lets them use the iPod just fine. 
Song transfers are just a little on the slow side that is all.
