Yes, you can remove the iMac 450's CD player and replace it with the
one from the iMac 400. It's a simple swap that requires nothing more
than standard Phillips screwdrivers (of varying sizes to fit the
screws). It will work as a DVD player and as a CD player. However,
you may have to reinstall the operating system in order to provide
support for the DVD player through the proper extension (assuming
you're still running OS 8.x or 9.x.
Thank you for your input, Jim! My dead iMac has a 40 GB HD that I
bought about 2 years ago. It has OS X.3.9, and all my music, so, I'll
transplant the HD and the DVD player, plus RAM memory, to the "new"
iMac.
The dead iMac was bought new in 1999, and was kinda flaky for the last 2 years.
