 Hi, Listers!

My iMac (400 MHz, slot DVD player) finally died 2 days ago. :-(
Can I put the DVD player on a iMac 450 with CD-ROM slot player?
Will it work as a DVD player or just a CD player?
 TIA and best regards.

Yes, you can remove the iMac 450's CD player and replace it with the one from the iMac 400. It's a simple swap that requires nothing more than standard Phillips screwdrivers (of varying sizes to fit the screws). It will work as a DVD player and as a CD player. However, you may have to reinstall the operating system in order to provide support for the DVD player through the proper extension (assuming
you're still running OS 8.x or 9.x.

Thank you for your input, Jim! My dead iMac has a 40 GB HD that I bought about 2 years ago. It has OS X.3.9, and all my music, so, I'll transplant the HD and the DVD player, plus RAM memory, to the "new" iMac. The dead iMac was bought new in 1999, and was kinda flaky for the last 2 years.

Best regards.

Hugo,

You're welcome. In order to prevent some first-time startup problems after you make the RAM/DVD/HD drive switch, don't forget to press the cuda button (located in line with the IDE cable connector on the horizontal plane and below and to the left of the PRAM battery on the vertical plane on the logic board) once, then do a PRAM reset during the first boot (hold down the Option, Command, P and R keys for at least three chime cycles). This forces your logic board to its factory default settings and makes your OS X system identify your hardware and load appropriate extensions/drivers. This should guarantee a seamless and trouble-free transition to the "new" RAM, DVD and hard drives in your iMac 400. But you may well have to reset some user-defined preferences the cuda and PRAM resets will move to factory default status.

Finally, while you've got access to your logic board (you've already removed the perforated EMI shield to find and get to the cuda button), check the voltage of the PRAM battery. It should be 3.6 volts or slightly higher. If it's not, put in a new battery and forget about it for another 5 years or so. A dying PRAM battery can cause "kinda flaky" behavior.
