Some recent flakiness on my flat panel iMac has reminded me that is is time to develop a better back up solution. I am looking for an external Firewire HD under $150, but am a bit overwhelmed by the results I get from searching the various websites. Can anyone recommend any specific manufacturers, retailers, etc? I would appreciate any other tips about making this an effective solution.
I have two matching LaCie 160GB Porsche drives, which I bought a while back from their refurbished sale site for $100 each. I wrote a backup system that runs in an nightly cron job, and I rotate the drives out weekly... one is always at my office, and the other is always at home. My backup solution creates a weekly "full" backup, and daily incremental backups. The drive at home is connected to my iMac for automatic nightly backups, and the one at my office is occasionally connected to my PowerBook for manual backups. This way I have not only nightly backups of my iMac, but I also have remote backups, which lessens the likelihood of total data loss.
It's not a perfect solution, but it's a lot better than what most people have. :)
