Chuck D., I think maybe you misunderstood about the running of Startup
Disk (above). I was still in OS X when I ran Startup Disk to boot to
OS 9. Doesn't matter, though. What you said about there being an
update is good to know. I'll look for it.

Your info on the resetting the PRAM and second chime not being the
"magic bullet". Also good to know. I had been giving it 3 chimes,
but still wasn't having any success.

Your 'FIX' using XpostFacto... I decided to take a look at XPF (read
the Wikipedia page first, then went to the official site). Read the
troubleshooting steps in the online manual about what to do when your
machine won't boot anymore. The suggestions were alot of what I've
been trying... some old, but some new. Mr. Rempel (author of XPF)
also suggested clearing the PRAM several times, removing the battery
and unplugging the machine, etc... Hey, why didn't I think of that?
I think the battery is shot in this machine anyway. I've noticed, in
the past, if I unplugged it for only a few hours I would have to reset
the time when I booted up again. That's something to try. Before I
did that, I gave the ol' Cmd+Option+p+r one more shot (actually, I
gave it 5 more shots). Just as I released the keys, I realized I
still had my USB drive attached. Dang!! Oh well... It doesn't look
like this is going to work anyway... Flashing ? folder. Another long
sigh. Thoughts of opening the iMac to retrieve the hard drive started
going through my mind. Just then... Hey, what's this?! I see a OS 9
smiling Mac. It's booting!! And from the USB drive!! I swear it!!
The Graphite booted all the way up and looked just like the Bondi
where the OS 9 came from (of course). I was still shocked. I looked
around. Everything was there. OS X and OS 9 on the internal drive.
Blessed OS 9 System Folder. OK, so it booted... but from the USB
drive. What's going to happen when the USB has been connected? How
will it boot then? Then I remembered what you were saying about the
OS 9 Startup Disk not working well with OS X. I'm stuck. How am I
ever going to boot to OS X again? I figured, at this point, I can't
do any more harm. If it doesn't work, I'm no worse off than I was a
few minutes earlier. I'll just reset PRAM again (maybe). I ran the
OS 9 Startup Disk. Strange thing... NOW it shows the OS 9 on the USB
drive to be running version 9.2.2 and the one on the internal drive to
be 9.1.2. There is definitely something screwy going on there.
Anyway, clicked Restart (with the USB drive still attached). OS X
booted on it's own and didn't use the USB drive (that I can tell).
I'm going to give it the real acid test by removing the USB drive
later.

Anyway, according to Mr. Rempel there is alot of 'blessing' and 'de-
blessing' of System Folders going on when OS X and OS 9 are on the
same partition. Read this really helped:
http://eshop.macsales.com/OSXCenter/XPostFacto/Framework.cfm?page=XPostFacto3.html#partition
Also, the section on troubleshooting when the Mac won't boot:
http://eshop.macsales.com/OSXCenter/XPostFacto/Framework.cfm?page=XPostFacto3.html#nostartup

So, in the end, it appears that everything is running just fine now.
Thank you for all of your assistance and not giving up on me. Now it
looks like I need to partition my internal hard drive. But first, I
need to make a backup. I'm so confused... I thought that what I was
doing the caused all this mess. :) Thanks again.

Lonnie.
