Patrick, I had the same experience with 2 G4 imacs and again with 2  
G5 imacs
They still read the OS CDs and also most professionally made CD or DVDs
but will not read or burn homemade either through Toast or iTunes.
As you mention searching the web reveals this to be a common problem.
My solution was to buy an external burner I opted for the Lacie  
firewire burner
and have successfully burned several hundred Cds and DVDs with it  
even though
some of the comments about this model are unfavourable.
