So I've got this iMac G3 with a fresh install (I'm assuming from a
Universal install CD) of 10.4. Someone else installed Tiger. I've
updated it to 10.4.11. Nothing else on this machine. No OS 9. No
Classic icon in System Preferences. The drive has the OS 9 drivers.
I'm digging around in a drawer looking for something else when I come
up with the grey OS X (10.4) install DVDs for my companies iMac G5. I
noticed the second disc says it includes Mac OS 9.2. Hmm... I
wonder... Actually, I just wanted to see what it looked like on the
disc. Was it just a folder with a bunch of files or was it a special
install package. I pop the disc in. Read the readme files. The OS 9
readme file has an important note that says this will provide classic
support to run OS 9 applications but you can't boot to OS 9. What?
That doesn't sound right. Not from my past experiences. I had to try
it.

I installed OS 9. Ran Classic. Everything is fine. Go to Startup
Disk. OS 9 shows up. Well, if you weren't supposed to be able to
boot to it, why would it show up in SD. I had this problem before,
but am starting to think it was because my drive didn't have the OS 9
drivers installed. That's why I couldn't boot to OS 9 before. This
is a different iMac and I know the drivers are installed. I select OS
9.2.2 as the Startup Disk. Restart. Works fine. Play around a
little. Go to OS 9.2.2 Startup Disk and choose OS 10.4.11 and
restart. Boots into Tiger just fine.

One thing I noticed at this point... The OS System Folder didn't have
the gold color 9 on it until AFTER I booted to OS 9 and then booted
back to Tiger. I specifically remember this because after installing
OS 9, the folder looked like any other folder. I opened and closed it
to bless it. No change. I rebooted Tiger. No change. Not until
booting to OS 9 and back to Tiger did the icon change. Hmm...

Anyway... Now that my little experiment is over, how do I remove OS 9
and Classic support from this iMac? Dragging the OS 9 related folders
to the Desktop don't make them 'invisible'. System Preferences/
Classic still finds the OS 9 System Folder (on the Desktop). Dragging
them to the Trash doesn't work because it says "System Folder" is
required by the System. And, of course, Classic is not currently
running.

So, how do I get this Classic off of here now? Running the Installer
again doesn't give me an option to uninstall/remove it. I can't boot
this G5 disc. The only thought that I have right now is to boot OS 9
from a USB drive and try to remove the files. Thoughts? Suggestions?

Lonnie.
