Hi Wilton,

You didn't tell us, exactly how you did the update to 10.5.7, often
problems can come up, depending on how one does the update.

I love Appleworks, too, and recently upgraded to 10.5.7, and it is
working, just fine.

First step is to simply restart your Mac, in Safe Mode, this sorts
out things, and often is all you have to do, to get your Mac running
smoothly, again.

Starting up into Safe Mode does three things to simplify the startup
and operation of your computer:

It forces a directory check of the startup volume.
It loads only required kernel extensions (some of the items in /System/
Library/Extensions).
Taken together, these changes can work around issues caused by
software or directory damage on the startup volume.
Some features don't work in Safe Mode

Safe Mode can be useful for troubleshooting. However, certain Mac OS X
features do not work when you are started up in Safe Mode. For
example, you can't use DVD Player, capture video in iMovie, use an
AirPort card, use audio input or output devices, or use an internal or
external USB modem.

**During the startup in Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you will see "Safe
Boot" on the login window, which appears even if you normally log in
automatically.

To leave Safe Mode in any version of Mac OS X, restart the computer
normally, without holding any keys during startup.

Restart in Safe Mode by holding down shift key, until you see the
spinning gear, then wait, a long long time, for it to start up. Go
make a cup of tea, and come back.

If that did not solve the problem, you may have to do an Archive &
Install.

Did you follow these steps for updating? Simplified steps given at
MacFixt, & other Mac Forums.

Always use the Combo update, downloaded directly from Apple.
( Personally, I never use the Software update function for OS updates!)

Next, back up, to an external bootable drive. Then eject external
drive by dragging it to the trash.

Shut down all applications, browsers, etc.

Clear Caches, clean up desktop, repair permissions, shut down your
Mac. (It is always good to be running an OS X maintenance utility
like: Onyx, Macaroni, etc.)

Disconnect all peripherals.

Re-start in Safe mode,

Run installation, re-start, repair permissions, (yes, again).

Then, step by step, reconnect peripherals. Checking each one, to see
if it is working properly.

10.5.7 has been causing some issues, with peripherals, so, check at
MacFixit, and see here: http://mac.alltop.com/
