Yes, each widget does use some memory, but mainly people are annoyed that accidentally hitting F12 renders their computer useless until dashboard comes awake enough to escape out of.

Thats one of the things i do at boot, wake up dashboard. And im on a PowerMac G3 B&W with a 400MHz CPU!
