Booting from the DVD takes longer, in some machines a LOT longer to come up. Leave it alone for a while. THIS is the screen you don't want to see: <http://tinyurl.com/3doymjf> If you're getting that regardless of which drive you're booting from, it's a hardware problem, and if testing the memory doesn't fix it, it's either an added hardware device or the logic board.
