To get an up to date operating system, go get Ubuntu 12.04 PPC, download the LiveCd .iso .dmg
burn it to a disk and try it from the Cd before installing. I've used Ubuntu 9.04 with my 1999 Apple PowerBook Lombard G3/400, back around 2010.. Try it.
