All right--here's where this stands: I have ordered a Samsung external DVD
writer (SE-218CB/RSBS), and I found a (nominally) 24-inch ViewSonic monitor
(VX2452mh) on CL locally for $90, which I thought was a pretty good deal.
Soon I'll order the middle of the three Mini models upgraded to a full SSD
(and I might or might not max the RAM to 16gb), but am only waiting to see
if Apple's Back-To-School education special this summer adds anything
useful to the regular education pricing. I know the price itself won't
change, but as I recall they generally throw in something extra during that
time. Or I may just lose patience and get the thing right away, we'll see.

And it should all come in at a bit over a kilo-buck, including tax.

My thanks for everyone's input! Bill
