Hi,

This is off-topic, but we got this message (see below) regarding a web site we host. I can't make heads or tails of it. I search the web and looked at the relevant explanations and they still don't make sense. It's one of those things where if you already understand it, what you're saying makes sense. But if you don't already understand it, you're not going to learn. Can anyone explain it to me?

Thanks,

Ben

To whom it may concern:

This email is being sent from Mediacom Network Operations Center, about
our ticket INC 67055. We
were recently given an IP range from ARIN (American Registry for
Internet Numbers) that may still
exist on the Bogon prefix you are currently using.

A Bogon prefix is a route that should never appear in the Internet
routing table. A packet routed
over the public Internet (not including over VPN or other tunnels)
should never have a source
address in a Bogon range. These are commonly found as the source
addresses of DDoS attacks.

The IP scope referenced is 173.0.0.0/8 with an ASN of 6478 or 7018
provided by AT&T. We intend
to purchase more IPs within this range very soon.

This IP scope was on the Bogon list and was blocked by all websites
using a Bogon prefix up until
February of 2008, when it was released by IANA (Internet Assigned
Numbers Authority) for public
use and an updated Bogon prefix was provided. Mediacom customers that
are within this IP scope are
not able to reach a website hosted, or for traffic being routed, by your
organization. This web address' IP
address is 66.224.41.59 and the url is www.pacificrimcamera.com . It has
been confirmed that Mediacom customers outside of
this IP scope range do not have a problem getting to this website; thus
confirming an out-of-date Bogon.

We have included an attachment with the ping and trace from a customer
on this scope as well as a
ping and trace from Mediacom's corporate IP address.

Mediacom requests that you update your Bogon prefix to the most current
version to resolve this
issue immediately. In the meantime, Mediacomâ?Ts customers are unable to
benefit from any services you
or your clients provide. It is imperative this issue is resolved
immediately.
