It is an RFC standard for remote queued mail service. ETRN (Extended Turn)
replaced the old standard (TURN) which simply turned around an SMTP session.
With TURN someone could telnet in to your server and say "TURN mydomain.com"
and they would get all stored mail for that domain... even if they were not
really the mail server for that domain. Now with ETRN they can send the
command from anywhere and the mail gets dequeued to the SMTP box that DNS
says is the right MX (Mail Exchanger) record for that domain (gosh was that
a short and simple sentence). Say you are MX record (priority 20) for a
domain and his "on-line sometimes" box has an IP address that is MX record
(Priority 10)(lower # means higher priority)... When an SMTP box in
I-NetWorld tries to send mail to his domain it will try him first, when he
is off line it will timeout and then send it to you. You being a smart mail
server will hold on to that mail (rather than trying to shove it in to a POP
box) until he connects and issues the ETRN command (to your box) followed by
his domain name. You will then go in to your store of queued messages and
look for ones that end with his domain name and dQ them (forward them to the
MX record with the higher priority [lower #]), HIM. See these guys at the
IETF are worth something after all. You do this stuff for Corp guys in
rural areas and you can save them 10G a year in dedicated access but they
still get all of their own mail administration as if they were dedicated,
you get paid, the IETF gets nothing and life goes on. Now that's the way it
