We have been running against SQL 7.0 SP1 (SP1 is very important) We
started with the source to the DLL that IPSwitch is using. From there we
wrote our dll to be fully threaded and using a single connection to the
database which is persistant. Once a user is in memory cache they are held
(and their information) in the cache for 45minutes before we flush them
from the cache. When they make changes to their account via the web
interface (like password whatever) this is written to the cache and
flagged to be updated back to SQL when they expire.
Now the bad part. This better have a good environment / power system as
you lose power your in for a world of hurt.. We currently run about 25,000
users in the database. This is a common database for Radius/Billing/Imail
running from a Quad Xeon PIII-500 on hardware raid 5.
The problems you are seeing might be the fact the machine is not respond
fast enough. We use dedicated Gigabit ethernet between the servers for
internal use and then 100Mbit external Interfaces on all the servers..
Specific config of what we have is available upon request. The source to
the DLL is not available at this time as it is very specific to our task.
Again I will itterate the only problem I have ever seen with properly
configured servers (thanks Mr. Donnely) is that IMAP goes nuts under heavy
load...
