Okay.. a couple people wrote me off list so I thought I'd send in some more
details. This is really weird so I'm hoping that we can put our noggins
together and figure out what the problem is.
First of all let me be more specific about what I'm doing. I host MANY
mailing lists through my web site. You can either send email directly to
the listserv subscribing to a given list, or you can use a form I've built
in to my list page that will hadle the chore for you. When you input your
name and email address and select a list to subscribe to, it automatically
generates an email (CFMail) to you from the listserv address. My mail
server and web server are seperate beasts.
So an email is generated from the web server, is sent to the mail server,
and sent out to the subscriber. The email is an autoverification email that
the subscriber must respond to in order to sub to the list.
When the email goes out it goes out as
To [EMAIL PROTECTED]
>From [EMAIL PROTECTED]
The only problem is that a LOT (if not all) these autoverification emails
get hung up and moved to the undeliverable directory. This isn;t to say
that ALL emails get hung up, just some (and since we pump a LOT of email
through our system daily it ends up being quite a bit).
For instance just a little while ago a gentleman subscribed to a mailing
list and it hung and ended up getting moved to the undeliverable directory
on my web server. When you subscribe to on eof my lists though you are
automatically subbed to our monthly newsletter as well (this goes out as a
second email sub request directly to the listserv) and that went through for
this gentleman.
Here is the error for the hung email:
"Error","TID=290","09/07/99","18:30:49","Error occurred while attempting to
send mail message. - [PT_ERROR] General error (550 not local host msn.com,
not a gateway) - Sender = '[EMAIL PROTECTED]', Recipients =
'[EMAIL PROTECTED]' - Undelivered message archived to
'C:\CFUSION\MAIL\UNDELIVR\CFM17C9.TMP'"
And here is the sub notification that the second subscription went through:
successful subscribe for [EMAIL PROTECTED]
>Someone's Name here
This problem also occurs with other email generated from our site. When you
enter information to any of the databases in our site it automatcially
generates an email to us letting us know. I would say about 80-90% o fthese
get to us with the other 10-20% getting ctuck in the undeliverable directory
with the same error above:

This particular person submits a LOT of data to our site and we get many of
the forms she generates, but there are also quote a few (like this one
above) that we don't get.
Now what I would really like to know. is this an IMail problem, or a
problem with CF/CFMail? Keep in mind that I have relay set for local users
on our mail machine.
