First of all, I appreciate the concern IPSwitch has for 'not violating RFCs'
but...
Here's an idea ( ok, actually it's a plea, I'm begging here! ),
1) SMTP should call functions in a stub dll such as
elcomeMessage( hostname), AcceptMail( hostname, IP ), etc...
2) If we want to override this behavior, ipswitch can provide the source
code (just they already do for odbcuser.dll). We can do our thing and
return false, custom messages, etc...
This would provide the flexibility that system admins desire! I would even
recommend that ipswitch add their own tag to the welcome message if custom
code is being used. This way, if a mail server response appears slow, at
least imail would be protected from the critics.
As a matter of fact, I can guarantee that these 'add-in' packages would be
available immediately!
It might even convert some of tkose linux/sendmail folks :)
