J.B., you are correct that user.txt and user.lst are the files
for the list subscribers. One address per line in each file.
digest.lst is the digest list users.
These files will be located in the lists\listname folder. List
named joes_fishing will be \lists\joes_fishing\users.txt, etc.
You can open the *.inf file in notepad and create responses
more than the set characters. For example if your auto-response
is for the 'goaway' box then your file will be named goaway.inf.
Just edit this in notepad and say what you really want to say.
