We had a similar problem. We first thought that it might be a problem with DNS but we 
realized later that IMail server tried to send messages using the internal LAN IP. We 
changed registry settings, restarted and since then all mails were delivered w/o 
problems.

I don�t know if this reflects your case but might be worth a try.
