Does this seem doable?

yep, programmers can do anything.  vbg

I have no problem with coding the necessary
synchronization routines to make this work, I fully expected to have to do
this.

well, it wasn't going to happen spontaneously.  vbg

But, does anyone have any suggestions or pointers on how this may
work or not work if that may be the case...

Imail5 has no API other than the protocols it supports.  You might look into Imail's LDAP support, and www.OpenLDAP.org, and other LDAP resources, to use LDAP as your user "directory".

like DoubleTake handle failover redundancy.  Or, is there another solution
that has already been coded?

Some "niceman" has "fixed" Ipswitch's ODBC so it works more reliably with SQL7.  Start with that, at least.

Any input here would be appreciated.  This of
course implies that I plan on keeping the Imail user dbase in SQL 7...

Your assumed c++ skill apart, I wonder if c++ is the best applicaton tool for this web app, which doesn't seem to have very complicated logic?   Will the app on Windows only or in a thin-client/browser?

ie, ColdFusion loves SQL.  It's very easy to write control/admin panels, account management, user management type apps in CF.

And just today I've been reading about some PERL add-ons for Apache (http://www.masonhq.com/ and http://perl.apache.org/embperl/index.html) which look very interesting for embedding PERL "tags" into HTML. PERL has modules for talking to odbc/SQL.
