CNAME is not universally popular, with some people preferring A records
everywhere.
I recommend you take the A record approach for your group of sub-domain /
hosts in your list rather than experiment.

I have done this repeatedly with my DNS pointing to various hosts at
different ip addresses: meiway.com, ns1.meiway.com, ms1.meiway.com.
And then when the sub-domains are on the same ip address, use the MMC/IIS4
to define the host-header(s) a sub-domain is to respond to.
I don't need any ASP trickery to do this.

I don't think this is a DNS pb at all. Are you runing MS DNS or BIND on NT?
