Well, I do not use PC Anywhere, but I have used VNC to defrag with great
success for many months.
I use Diskkeeper, which you can program to run at automatic intervals each
day. That is probably the easiest way to do it. I have also run Diskkeeper
manually on my servers from home using VNC to control it. There is not much
of a problem, other than the fact that it will slow response time down on
screen refreshes a bit. VNC seems to use about 5 megs of RAM while it is
running, and Diskkeeper (or any defrag program) will take up some memory and
slow down the hard drive as well, so I do not recommend running the programs
at peak intervals, as you will slow eveything down (and the disk will not
defrag as well, or as fast).
FYI, I have this combo on two servers. One runs Imail. It has 64 MB of RAM,
a 4 MB IDE drive and a Pentium Pro 200 MMX as the CPU. It also hosts a
couple of websites using IIS, and handles well over 1,000 e-mails per day,
occasionally as many as 10,000. This combo has been running with no problems
for well over six months now. I admin everything from home now, and only
travel to the server site to do occasional physical server maintence. It has
not crashed even once during that time.
