No,  that  won't work. The HOSTS is consulted after the local host and
host alias list.

This  one  of  many  reasons  why  it  is appropriate to have a unique
hostname  as the OHN of the virtual host, with the default mail domain
as  a  host  alias.  If  you  remove  the alias, you do not affect the
ability  of  users to log in to retrieve old mail, while new mail will
be routed off-box.
